What was the first thing you did when you found out you were pregnant? I googled what cheese I could eat.
I only decided to start the blog when I was 34 weeks pregnant so there hasn't really been a 'journey' to follow on here. But at 39 weeks, I wanted to summarise my personal experience and surprisingly, I've LOVED it.
The bump at 27 weeks |
I say surprisingly because:
- I've never been broody
- One Born Every Minute genuinely freaks me out
- I've always preferred fluffy animals to babies
However, I've truly embraced the ride and didn't realise just how 'into it' I would be. I totally get why girls say that they miss their bump. I'm going to miss having this little wriggly alien creature inside me. I've even enjoyed the constant kick in the ribs.
I only endured nausea right at the beginning and haven't suffered from any swelling, even during the summer. Working for myself has given me the flexibility to take power naps in between conference calls - something I am grateful for.
My bump has been a little shy and compact to say the least. It took a while to pop and I think commuters on the tube assumed my 'Baby on Board' badge was some kind of ironic hipster fashion statement.
But from around 34 weeks it's been 100% visible in clothing and I've really enjoyed my belly being touched by complete randoms.
Despite being surrounded by experienced and supportive friends and family who've offered invaluable advice (you know who you are), I highly recommend NCT classes. NCT helped Dan and I get in the zone and now we know (or think we know) how to change a nappy, together with lots of other very useful things. I found that our teacher had a very pro-hypnobirthing attitude which, I really liked. We've made some really lovely friends and so far, everyone has given birth earlier than expected; rare when 70% of first time pregnancies are at least a week late so this prompted me to pack my hospital bag in a flash.
The one thing I've been suffering from over the last couple of weeks is Pelvic Girdle Pain which is really uncomfortable and sometimes I can't walk at all. From the start, I made a conscious effort to stay active and flexible with ante-natal yoga and pregnancy barre workouts (ok, I didn't do these religiously) so I'm surprised to have PGP but I guess it's also to do with how the baby is currently positioned.
Dan and I are so relaxed because we honestly don't believe this is really happening. Most people would probably freak out that the nursery hasn't been decorated and there's still lots to organise but we just keep laughing as the date approaches - it all seems so surreal but soon it will 100% be real and I can't wait to meet baby.
